In memoriam Rosetta’s Philae lander, song from 67P.
ESA scientists have discovered a strange series of sub-human-hearing oscillations amid particles in comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko’s magnetic field. This “cosmic song” is created by micro-particles discharged by the comet that become electrically charged through ionization in a mysterious process not completely understood. These lyrical magnetic oscillations are sung at the 40-50 millihertz range, far below human hearing. Rosetta’s Plasma Consortium team was unexpectedly surprised by the phenomenon and is working to unravel the mysterious physics behind this heavenly hit. The comet recording’s frequency is amplified by 10,000 to permit our ears to enjoy.
